In this edition of Between the Covers, we interview debut poet and author Henry White II, whose new poetry book comes out on January 18, 2022.

Henry’s book is entitled Above the Veil

Angelina: What made you decide to write this book?

Henry: I started writing in my teens. The genesis were rap lyrics, prose, short stories, and poetry. Finally, I settled in on poetry because it flowed more naturally for me. I am a voracious reader and logophile* so the ability to cleverly weave vivid imagery and wordsmithing (not sure if that is a word) were things that I learned from the classics; my favorite being Edgar Allan Poe. What materialized was a journal of poetry that I used to express my innermost thoughts, emotions, pain, opinions, and ultimately the human condition.

Angelina: How do you personally define success as an author?

Henry: I would say that with this specific project, success would be readers identifying with the themes and what I am trying to convey and the technical aspects of my writing. I hope that readers will be positively impacted and see a little bit of themselves in Above The Veil.

Angelina: How would you describe your writing style?

Henry: I would say that my style refuses to fit into a comfortable category other than poetry. What I mean by that is that some of the poems are technical in a more classical sense. But I also integrate free flow, prose, and spoken word type poetry. In this work, I touch on different aspects of the human condition. The driving forces behind the style of the individual poems are the topic, the visceral effects of the stimuli, and candidly the mental state that I was in when I wrote them.

Angelina: Do you have a day job?

Henry: Ironically, two weeks after I started working with my writing coach on this book, I lost my job. The book was not the reason. But since then, I have decided to bet on myself and pursue a literary career as it is something that I have dreamed of manifesting for quite some time.

Angelina: Please tell us about your childhood.

Henry: I grew up in Dallas, TX.   I have one brother younger than an older sister that is in heaven and me. New Year’s Ever 2021 is my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. My father went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2021.

Angelina: Who are your favorite writers?

Henry: My favorite poets are Edgar Allan Poe, e.e. Cummings and Langston Hughes. The fiction writer would be Mario Puzo. I think I have read every book that he has ever published. I aslo like Fredrik Backman a lot.  He is an incredible storyteller. His book Anxious People quickly rose to one of my all-time favorites and put him on my radar. For non-fiction, I will go with James Baldwin, although he is very diverse in his literary formats and, more recently, Ryan Holiday.

Angelina: Can you tell us who has been most supportive in this journey?

Henry: My Father passed away on June 22, 2021, two days after Father’s Day. And the next day, I ended my three-year relationship with my, then, fiancé. So navigating that was like walking through an emotional minefield wearing a blindfold. I began compiling this collection shortly afterward upon prompting a close family friend who read a few of my poems. The support I’ve received from friends and family throughout has proven irreplaceable. They would read my poetry, sometimes with their eyes wide open in bewilderment at the raw emotions that had been like a super collider inside of me, all without judging me. I was like a volcano bubbling beneath the surface, and in my darkest times, when I wanted to quit, when I doubted myself, they were the support group that would not allow me to stop believing in myself. I am beyond grateful for my friends and family. I could not have done this without them. This is making me emotional.

Angelina: How have you grown since you began this process?

Henry: When I started this project, I felt that just publishing a book would be an accomplishment, and it is, to a degree. Then I began to dream bigger, bestseller.   Then doubts began to set in. I started to question if I had what it takes to be a successful author. I questioned my talent. I questioned my vision. I began to doubt if this was God’s will for me. With the transparency in this book, I wondered how people would view me going forward. I feared failure. A very good friend I call a brother told me, “The fact that you are doing this means you are a success. There is no failure here.”  There is no failure at this point.”  Then I confided in another close friend and confidant about my fears and doubts, having just completed her autobiography. She reminded me that “The path of freedom is through transparency” and “God put this in you.”

Angelina: Why do you feel it was essential to write this book?

Henry: This collection of poems was selected from, in essence, my poetic journal. When writing, I did not intend for this to be for public consumption as the emotions are poignant and personal. The impetus for me releasing this collection as a book was close friends confiding in me that these poems could ease the readers’ lives and show that there is hope despite the many pains and traumas in life. My hope is in God through His Son Jesus (Yeshua).

Angelina:  It’s exciting to have your first book out. Do you have anything planned right now for another book?

Henry: I am always writing poetry but have no other projects right now. I am working on promoting Above The Veil.
