5 Free Things to do this Winter | Travel

Winter temperatures in the mid-70s make perfect weather for exploring outside.

So, when you’re between beaches, take your pick from all of the free stuff to do on The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel. Here are just five of our favorites to get you started.

Holiday Boat Parades

The holiday boat parades are a special treat here. Dozens of boats decorated in Christmas lights glow and glide while music, food and crafts put you in the holiday spirit. Don’t miss this beloved tradition. Check the dates and bring a blanket for parades in Fort Myers Beach and Cape Coral.

Free Movie in the Park

Bring a blanket, some chairs and hop across the Caloosahatchee River to Cape Coral. On one Saturday every month, a free movie plays in the park on a big inflatable screen. Come Christmas time, they may be playing one of your favorites. Previous winter movies have included A Christmas Storyland Elf. Check Cape Coral’s website for the latest picks.

Sunset Celebration at Time Square

The Sunset Celebration is a cultural custom on Fort Myers Beach, attracting residents and visitors alike with hours of live music, talent and showmanship. It’s a wonderful cross-section of how different people enjoy the start of every Southwest Florida weekend. And it all runs like clockwork every Friday and Saturday.

Cape Coral Art & Music Festival

Join us in January for the annual Cape Coral Arts & Music Festival. The annual showing of fine arts has been a favorite since 1985. And now over 300 exhibitors bring collections of paintings, photography, crafts and more to the two-day event. A recently added music festival hosts musicians from many genres, including country, rock and jazz.

Nature Reserves, Preserves and Parks

Enjoy nature’s bounty at one of the area’s many parks. Pack a picnic lunch and hit the trails on foot or on bike, take in a guided tour, or grab your binoculars and see who can spot the most native and migratory birds. Entrance to many parks is usually free, but you may have to pay to park your car.
