Gen X Review – by Angelina Assanti

I have to tell you when my teenage counterpart told me this was the movie he wanted to review, I let out a huge sigh. Really? Another installment in a series that is over twenty years old seems like a bad idea. Besides, I had seen the commercials. It looked like a two-hour ad for Lexus.

My initial thoughts: I never got to appreciate Chris Hemsworth when he was Thor. But unmasked, donning an expensive suit, and haircut, hey, I can look at this guy for two hours no matter how bad the movie is.

In the true Hollywood fashion of hypocrisy, they don’t mind personifying Chris Hemsworth’s sexuality in a post #metoo movement by making sure Chris was the one objectified. I couldn’t help but notice his shirt kept falling off in this movie. I won’t be writing the movie studio to complain but to warn you ahead of time, this is NOT the guy you will be seeing on the beach this summer, so lower your vacation expectations.

I caution you not to view this movie as another installment of MIB. You are better off pretending you looked into a neuralyzer (yes, this is the correct spelling) and forget the previous MIB movies even existed because this movie lacks pivotal things MIB was known for:

  • These two characters have no chemistry. Strangely, they had more chemistry in “End Game.”
  • The soundtrack sucked. Well, no Will Smith so…
  • There are NO funny lines. MIB is known for their lines. Remember Will Smith’s, “I make this look good.”
  • This is a comedy. Okay. If that’s what the writers want to believe. However, there’s something missing. Oh yeah, comedy! I didn’t laugh once. It wasn’t funny. I smiled a few times and that was when the character of Pawny made comments. I know you were thinking it was Chris.

Most stories have a line of romance somewhere. The writers tried to force an attraction with the two characters that was simply not there. These two lead actors prove that Nora Ephron’s theory (When Harry Met Sally) that a man and woman can’t be friends is definitely not true! Hollywood seems to have forgotten that you can have asexual chemistry as Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith had in the original MIB movies.

They should have just had aliens fall in love if they really wanted to push the love thing. The writers must have been Star Trek fans because, in true Captain Kirk fashion, we learn about Chris’s relationships with aliens. Hey, who wouldn’t want to wrap all their extra arms around Chris?

Good elements: there was a plot twist about ¾ into the movie that I didn’t see coming, special effects were great, it was nice to see Emma Thompson as a high-ranking member of MIB – although her part was way too small, the good guys win.

Bad elements: there was no humor, it didn’t resemble its predecessors, they show the best parts in the ads, it IS a two-hour ad for Lexus, the actors seemed like they were acting in two different movies.

The biggest thing this movie was missing is the humorous alien reveals. There was one but this series is known for making comedic beats with aliens. It just wasn’t here. Perhaps the writers should have actually watched the former movies.

If you go in thinking this is a totally independent story, you’ll be able to enjoy it as strictly science fiction.

I give this flick 3 suns.

Gen Z Review – by Tommy D.

Going into this movie, I had incredibly low expectations. Looking at the advertisements, of which there were plenty, I expected a poorly done movie that did not resemble the originals at all. I was mostly incorrect, with the movies’ special effects and the way it created a sense of awe was incredibly similar to the original series.

However, this movie differed from the first ones in the lack of humor. The original was filled with good lines and excellent jokes, whereas this one just had terribly written humor that was not at any point enough to make me actually laugh.

The plot is excellent, and of course, the acting was incredible with the star-studded cast. Definitely one of the better remakes of a classic series, but it still does not quite feel like the original movies.

Certainly, a great movie to see if you are free, but it does not quite have the same draw as the other blockbusters we have had this year.

All in all, it is a solid B to B+ movie. 3 ½ suns
